Artistic Director  Rebecca Comerford Tryon  A native of Maine, Mezzo Soprano Rebecca Comerford has sung both nationally and internationally as an Opera soloist with some of the world’s finest houses including New York City Opera, The National Chorale at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Avery Fischer Hall, Spoleto Opera Italy, The Alhambra Theater Spain, Opera Memphis, Utah Opera, Tanglewood Music Center and Aspen Opera Theater to name a few. She holds a Masters Degree of Music from Manhattan School of Music in New York City and a Bachelors Degree in Voice from Eastman School of Music in Rochester NY. While in New York she co-founded City Youth Opera Company, a non-profit Children’s Opera Theater at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music where she was an Artist in Residence for four years. In addition, as a young artist with Opera Memphis where she made her debut as Tisbe in 2007, she performed Opera Outreach for over 15,000 schoolchildren in the greater Memphis area, sharing the love of Opera with kindergarteners to eighth graders. In New York City she worked as an educator and soloist through the Metropolitan Opera Guild. New to Ojai, Rebecca is excited to call “the pink valley” her home. She lives in town with her husband and their two year old daughter. She is thrilled to be bringing Opera to the youth of this beautiful community.   OPERA WORKSHOP The Opera Workshop is designed for singers ages 8-12. No prior singing experience is necessary. We will perform the Children’s Opera Cinderella commissioned by the Lyric Opera of Kansas City at the end of Camp. Young singers will have the opportunity to be introduced to classic operatic tales and symphonic overtures as well as improvise their own operas. Instruction will be given in movement, bel canto line and drama. Each singer will have the opportunity to sing as part of an ensemble and as a soloist alongside other professional guest artists.   OPERA STUDIO The Opera Studio is designed for singers 13-18 years of age. These students will perform a night of Opera Scenes as well as receive singing instruction in the classic Italian, French, and German repertoire. Emphasis will be placed on dramatic interpretation of librettos and arias through scene work and musical coaching. In addition instruction will be given in stage combat, vocal categorization, vocal health, pedagogy and alexander technique. This is a safe and supportive environment in which the student has the opportunity to utilize all they are learning through a live performance at the end of camp.
